Not every skin cancer needs Mohs surgery. Depending on the type, size and location of the cancer, the right treatment may be a standard surgical excision, a topical or in-office therapy for superficial cancers, or, for melanoma, an excision with margins and coordination with oncology when needed. This page explains the three most common skin cancers — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma — how each is diagnosed, and how Dr. Patel decides among treatment options. Whatever the treatment, the goals are the same: complete removal, confirmed by pathology, with the least visible scar we can achieve.

What is the difference between basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma?
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer; it grows slowly and very rarely spreads. Squamous cell carcinoma can grow more quickly, may develop from untreated precancers, and occasionally spreads. Both are highly curable when treated early.
How is melanoma treated?
With either Mohs surgery or surgical excision that includes a margin of healthy skin. The depth of the melanoma determines whether additional steps — such as sentinel lymph node evaluation or coordination with oncology — are recommended. We guide you through each decision.
Will I need to see an oncologist?
Most patients with basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma do not. For melanoma beyond a certain depth or with high-risk features, we coordinate directly with medical oncology and remain involved in your skin care throughout.
