Mohs Surgery

Mohs micrographic surgery removes skin cancer one thin layer at a time. Each layer is examined under the microscope in our on-site laboratory while you wait, so we take only the tissue that contains cancer and spare everything else. It is the treatment of choice for basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma on the face, ears, hands and other areas where every millimeter matters, and for cancers that are large, recurrent or aggressive. Dr. Patel completed advanced fellowship training in Mohs surgery and dermatologic oncology and performs the surgery, reads the slides and completes the reconstruction himself — a continuity of care that produces both the highest cure rates and the most refined results. For particularly complex reconstructions — especially those involving the nose — Dr. Patrick Pownell, a double board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in Mohs reconstruction, is available on the same floor to work alongside Dr. Patel. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia in our procedure suite; most patients go home the same day with a small, carefully closed wound. If you were referred by another physician, we will send a complete report and return you to their care for follow-up.

How long does Mohs surgery take?

Plan for a half day. Each layer takes about an hour to remove and examine, and most cancers are cleared in one or two layers. Reconstruction is completed the same day.

Will I have a scar?

Any surgery leaves some mark, but Mohs removes the least tissue possible, and Dr. Patel plans the reconstruction along natural skin lines. Most scars fade to a fine line over several months, and we follow the healing with you.

What is the difference between Mohs and a standard excision?

A standard excision removes the cancer plus a set margin of normal-appearing skin, which is sent to a lab and read days later. Mohs examines one hundred percent of the margin under the microscope while you wait, so no cancer is left behind and no healthy tissue is taken unnecessarily — the highest cure rate with the smallest wound.

Who repairs the area after the cancer is removed?

In most cases Dr. Patel completes the reconstruction himself the same day. For complex defects — particularly on the nose, where structure and symmetry matter most — Dr. Patrick Pownell, our double board-certified plastic surgeon, is available to perform or assist with the reconstruction. Very few Mohs practices offer this level of reconstructive depth under one roof.

All the staff was very professional.
