Actinic keratoses are patches of sun-damaged skin cells that can progress to squamous cell carcinoma. They are extremely common in North Texas and are usually found on the face, scalp, ears, forearms and hands. Treatment depends on how many you have and where: individual spots can be frozen in the office; widespread damage is often better treated as a “field” with photodynamic therapy or a prescription cream, which also improves the overall texture and tone of the skin. Treating precancers is part of the prevention half of our practice — pairing treatment with a sun-protection plan and regular exams.

Do all actinic keratoses become cancer?
No — only a small percentage progress to squamous cell carcinoma. But there is no way to predict which ones will, which is why we treat them and keep you on a regular exam schedule.
What is photodynamic therapy?
A light-activated treatment: a topical agent is absorbed by damaged cells, then activated by a specialized light that destroys them across the whole treated area. It addresses damage you can see and damage you cannot yet see, and often improves skin texture and tone. Expect redness and peeling for several days afterward.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Yes — actinic keratosis is a medical diagnosis, and treatment is covered by most plans. We verify your benefits before your visit.
