One in five Americans will develop skin cancer, and Texans carry more than their share of the risk. The good news is that basal cell, squamous cell and even melanoma are highly curable when found early. At Elevate Dermatology a screening visit includes a review of your history and sun exposure, a head-to-toe examination with a dermatoscope, photography of spots we want to watch, and — if anything looks concerning — a biopsy the same day. If a biopsy shows cancer, treatment, including fellowship-trained Mohs surgery, is available on our floor. We recommend annual exams for most adults and more frequent checks if you have a history of skin cancer, fair skin, significant sun exposure or many moles.

How often should I have a skin check?
For most adults, once a year. If you have a history of skin cancer, many moles, fair skin or significant sun exposure, your provider may recommend exams every three to six months.
What does the ABCDE rule mean?
It is a memory aid for melanoma warning signs: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, more than one Color, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving — any spot that is changing. Any mole that fits one of these deserves a professional look.
Is a skin cancer screening covered by insurance?
Medically indicated skin exams are covered by most insurance plans. We verify your benefits before your visit so there are no surprises.
