About Microneedling
When home skin products aren't effective, but you aren't ready for surgery, learn more about nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatments to rejuvenate the skin, like microneedling. The Elevate Medical Spa and Cosmetic Surgery team, led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thornwell Parker, is pleased to offer microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) at our office in Dallas, TX. Our microneedling technologies, the MicroPen or Skin Pen, use several fine-gauge needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries in the needed areas of the skin. The micro-injuries created by the treatment trigger the body's natural production of collagen and elastin, two nutrients that contribute to the appearance and health of the skin. A new innovation in microneedling is the use of growth factors or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to aid in the production of these nutrients. In addition, the use of growth factors has been shown to decrease post-treatment inflammation. Schedule a consultation at Elevate Medical Spa to hear more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to customize the treatment for your needs and goals.
Ideal Candidates
You may benefit from microneedling if you have mild to moderate skin issues, like a decrease in elasticity or a rough texture. Microneedling treatments can also minimize the appearance of stretch marks and scars. You must be willing to wait a while before seeing improvements from your microneedling treatment since collagen and elastin will need some time to have an effect on the skin, but you will develop natural-looking results and healthier overall skin.

Procedure Technique
Microneedling is completed in a private treatment room in about 30 – 60 minutes with numbing cream or local anesthesia if preferred, but patients generally report mild or no discomfort. The skin being treated will be cleansed before the handpiece is passed evenly over the chosen areas. After the microneedling is complete, a topical treatment, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum, can be applied to the treated area for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. A protective moisturizer will be applied, along with UV protection since your skin will be sensitive after the treatment.
Microneedling with PRP
The process for microneedling with PRP begins with the collection of blood to make the PRP. First, blood will be drawn from a vein in the arm, typically 5-15mL. The blood sample is then placed in a centrifuge which isolates the platelets, forming the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) concentration. This step in the process typically takes 15 minutes. While the centrifuge is distilling the PRP, the patient’s skin will be cleansed in preparation for the treatment. A light numbing agent will be applied to the treatment area to help prevent discomfort during the procedure. The practitioner will gently glide the microneedling device over the area to be treated, creating tiny holes in the skin penetrating approximately.5 to 2mm in depth. The microneedling device is a handheld machine that will have between 12-80 sterile, stainless needles that penetrate the skin.
PRP with microneedling has become one of the most in-demand skin rejuvenation treatments. Why? It delivers fast results giving skin a smooth, healthy and younger appearance through the powerful growth factors derived from platelet rich plasma. The goal of PRP skin rejuvenation therapy is to improve skin tone and texture, tighten skin, soften lines and pores. Results begin to show 3-4 weeks after the treatment session and continue to improve with time.
What to Expect
You may experience mild swelling and redness for about a day after the treatment, but this should fade naturally. It may take about 1 – 2 months as the collagen and elastin levels increase before you see visible improvements in the health and appearance of your complexion. You should plan to get about 4 – 6 maintenance treatments every 4 – 6 weeks for ideal results and long-lasting skin health.
