About Photodynamic Therapy
Elevate Medical Spa and Cosmetic Surgery in Dallas, TX is proud to offer photodynamic therapy to area men and women. This innovative dermatology treatment specifically targets and destroys precancerous skin damage. It combines the application of topical medication followed by exposure to a special blue or red light source. The medication is first applied and allowed to be absorbed by precancerous cells, then activated by the light to destroy sun damage. "All the staff was very professional."- Anonymous / Healthgrades / Oct 12, 2017
"This review is well overdue, but now you can be certain I am certain of my results! My skin wasn't horrid, but as it turns out, it needed work. I would get the usual lady cycle breakouts (even at 31) and the occasional pimple here and there. It would take 2-3 weeks to clear up. Who has time for that?! And then I was introduced to Felicia. Felicia put me on a ZO regimen in July. It took about a month for my skin texture to change. I did not even know that was a thing! My skin texture was smoother, brighter, and tighter! The compliments were rolling in!Fast forward to 6-7 months in, and if I may be self indulgent, am in love with my face. I always secretly wanted to be able to walk out of the house with no makeup (always sunscreen!) and look fantastic. With Felicia's guidance, I have been able to achieve that goal. My makeup consists of a tube of mascara, as I am confident enough not to hide behind foundation, CC cream, etc. It wasn't an overnight change, there are days where my face is itchy, there have been series of days of constant peeling and redness. However, I stuck with it, Felicia was a constant support, and I am so thankful I did."- R.B. / Yelp / Mar 13, 2018
"One of the most talented plastic surgeons. Dr Hanz is truly a miracle worker. Cosmetic surgery skills are amazing. He recently performed a very difficult hand surgery for my father in law. Amazing results. Highly recommend."- S.L. / Facebook / Feb 22, 2018

"Breast Implant Removal and Liposuction - The staff at Elevate was amazing from scheduling my consultation down to the actual procedure. I had two separate procedures performed by Dr. Hanz the first one being a breast implant removal and the second one was liposuction. Dr. Hanz and his staff were very helpful in answering all of my questions and concerns. My continued care after the procedures has been substantial as well. I would highly recommend Dr. Hanz and his staff for any of your cosmetic needs."- H. / RealSelf / Jan 30, 2018
Ideal candidates for PDT usually have lighter or fair skin that exhibits sun damage, particularly scaly spots called actinic keratosis. You may not be a good candidate if you are sensitive to light or taking any type of medication that might bring on skin irritation during light-based therapies. You may also not be eligible if you have certain medical conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus or porphyria. During your initial consultation, Drs. Parker and Hanz will review your medical history to determine if this treatment is right for you.
Photodynamic therapy uses specific topical medications called photosensitizing agents, most commonly Amileuz, Levulan, or Metvixia. Depending on where the treatment will be used, the medication is most often applied directly to the top layer of the skin. Once the drugs are administered and the proper incubation time has passed (usually 1 to 3 hours), you will be exposed to the light source to activate the photosensitizing usually for 5 to 16 minutes depending on the light source (most often the Blue U, Omnilux, or Sciton BBL). You may experience a warm, hot, tingling, stinging, or light burning sensation during the procedure. Although a cooling fan is sometimes used to help ease these symptoms, it is not immediately recommended because it may decrease the effectiveness of the treatment. Afterwards, your skin will be washed and a sunscreen will be applied to protect your skin.
What to Expect
PDT is safe and effective on areas such as the face, scalp, chest, arms, legs, and feet. Once your procedure is concluded, you should avoid direct sunlight for the first 24 – 48 hours. Nausea, dizziness, and headaches are possible side effects but these should subside within a day a two. Most patients experience redness or a sunburn type of reaction that lasts for approximately a week. Less commonly there is swelling, blistering and crusting. Typically we recommend a couple treatments that are scheduled 4 – 6 weeks apart for optimal results. We also consider repeating treatments every year or two in order to continue reducing the amount of actinic keratosis and sun damage on patients skin, hopefully reducing the number of skin cancers they have.
