About Thigh Lift Surgery

Losing weight is a great victory for any person. However, women and men who reach their goal weight may need other steps to finish their body transformation. Depending on how long you carried the extra weight and how much weight you have shed, hanging skin may be a separate concern if the skin was not able to shrink to the new size and shape of your body. The thighs, in particular, are a place of concern for most patients. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thornwell Parker offers thigh lift surgery (also known as thighplasty) at Elevate Medical Spa and Cosmetic Surgery in Dallas, TX. This procedure removes extra skin along the inner thighs to produce a more contoured, tighter appearance. Thigh lift surgery has risen in popularity because it offers natural results for patients fighting sagging skin on the thighs.

Ideal Candidates

A thigh lift is often performed on patients who have undergone weight loss procedures and lost at least 100 pounds. However, it is also popular in aging patients who are fighting sagging skin, as well as with women whose body weight fluctuated due to pregnancy. If you have loose, wrinkly, or hanging skin on the upper thighs (either the inner or outer thighs or both), a thigh lift may be an option. Please keep in mind that if cellulite is your bigger issue, our Elevate team can suggest other procedures that may help improve the appearance of cellulite, such as Cellfina cellulite therapy. Thigh lift surgery is a skin removal and skin tightening procedure that corrects hanging skin.

Surgical Techniques

During a thigh lift, IV sedation is usually administered to the patient. Two types of incisions are typically used based on the amount of skin redundancy and fat excess:

  • Horizontal  Placed and well-hidden along the groin crease, this technique is best suited for patients with minimal to fair skin excess since it only removes and tightens the thigh in the vertical direction.

  • Vertical + Horizontal In addition to an incision along the groin crease, an incision is made vertically down the inner thigh. This makes the incision more visible but allows for both vertical and horizontal skin removal and tightening. This procedure is better for patients with moderate to severe excess.

The skin will be pulled upward so it is taut and safely secured with sutures. In certain cases, other procedures, such as liposuction or a lower body lift, may be considered to provide even better results.

What to Expect

A thigh lift takes around 2 – 4 hours to complete. As soon as the surgery is over, you will be monitored and then sent home for recovery. There is often bruising, swelling, and discomfort during the initial recovery. On the same day, most Elevate patients are up and walking slowly, which is important for better blood circulation and faster healing. Patients should plan on at least one week to recover at home. Complete recovery from swelling typically takes at least a few weeks. During your healing period, at-home wound care will help the incision to heal so it is less visible. Even though there will be some scarring, the new shape and contour of your thighs may help you boost your confidence and flaunt your legs with pride.
